Donald Trump’s limited edition Bitcoin-themed sneakers have made a swift appearance on eBay, with scalpers listing them for up to $2,500. The sneakers, which were available for pre-order on July 31, sold out within three hours, leading to a frenzy among resellers hoping to cash in on the hype.
Sneaker Resale Frenzy
The rush to resell the exclusive footwear began almost immediately after their release. At the time of writing, 12 listings for the ‘Bitcoin orange’ high-tops can be found on eBay, with bids starting as low as $700. However, the highest asking prices reach up to $2,500, with some sellers accepting “best offers.” One particularly audacious listing humorously set the price at $69,999.
Despite the high ratings of most sellers, buyers remain cautious, as some feedback sections contain accusations of scams. Sellers typically promise to ship the sneakers once they receive them, expected between September and November.
Limited Edition and Potential Autographs
The Trump Sneakers website began pre-orders for the Bitcoin-themed high-tops on July 31, with only 1,000 pairs available. They sold out within three hours. Adding to their allure, five pairs are randomly autographed by Trump, giving buyers a 1 in 200 chance of scoring a signed pair.
Two other variations of the sneakers are still available on the official site: orange low-tops and black high-tops, each limited to 1,000 pairs and priced at $299. Some of these pairs will also feature Trump’s autograph.
Expanding the Trump Merchandise Line
The sneaker release is part of a broader range of Trump-themed products, including perfumes, a “Freedom” cooler priced at $299, and other footwear adorned with Trump-related slogans and American flag designs. This merchandise surge follows Trump’s recent embrace of cryptocurrency, a shift from his earlier dismissive stance.
Trump’s Shift on Bitcoin
The launch of these sneakers coincides with Trump’s appearance at the Bitcoin 2024 conference in Nashville on July 25, where he announced plans to create a “strategic national Bitcoin stockpile” if re-elected. This marked a significant departure from his previous comments in 2021 when he labelled Bitcoin a “scam” and expressed scepticism towards cryptocurrencies.
Earlier this year, Trump reversed his position, advocating for Bitcoin and other digital assets. He criticized President Joe Biden’s stringent crypto policies and vowed to place the U.S. at the forefront of the crypto industry.
