MetaMask issued a warning on its Twitter account after hearing rumours about an upcoming MetaMask snapshot or airdrop.
MetaMask, a provider of Web3 wallets, has alerted its users against “false rumours” of a MetaMask airdrop that have been circulating on social media. According to a March 28 tweet from MetaMask, there are “quite a few rumours going” about a March 31 snapshot or airdrop.

These rumors are not only false, but they are dangerous. They create opportunities for scammers and phishers.

“Not only are these rumours false, but they are also dangerous. These provide opportunities for scammers and phishers, MetaMask warned.
A number of fake Twitter accounts claiming to be associated with MetaMask or an airdrop of MetaMask tokens are spotted.
MetaMask has rejected rumours of a forthcoming airdrop in a Tweet and asked users to stay alert against fake sites in the coming days.

These reports may be related to ConsenSys CEO and Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin’s March 14 “fireside chat” session at ETHDenver 2023, where he stated that his company is “actively working to decentralize” MetaMask. Afterwards, he reportedly revealed that they planned to launch a token.
Lubin also initially hinted at a MetaMask token on November 8, 2021, when he tweeted, “Wen $MASK? Stay tuned”

Despite MetaMask’s debunking of an imminent airdrop, numerous responses from the community indicate optimism that an airdrop may still occur, although at a later date.
DappRadar data reveals that the number of transactions on March 27 increased to 21,460 from roughly 8,000 on March 27 prior to the rumours.
MetaMask saw a comparable burst of activity in November 2021 due to reports of an airdrop, following previous airdrops from both the Ethereum Name Service and Lubin’s mention of a coin.
